Serious question: how often do you have to charge? Doesn’t it regen enough to never require plugging in? The other thing I’d like to understand is real-world MPG in standard hybrid mode. Is it closer to 20 or 30+?

Somewhat have to agree with this. Yes, it probably will compete well in the upper premium sports segment, but c’mon OP’s desire for “seat massaging functions”? Alpina or even the regular series car would probably be a better fit. Maybe I’m out of touch with modern market trends, but if choosing between premium sports or luxury, I’d opt for the former.

Yes. Hybrids are a complete scam. MPG is calculated as you deplete the battery. We have an X5 hybrid.. in 'battery control', where the battery remains a constant charge, the MPG is about what my M5C gets, around 20-22 mpg. Where we live in CA, electricity is so expensive that it is cheaper to fill the tank in the X5 rather than charge it.

Again, hybrids are a complete scam.

A few years ago Harry of Harry’s Garage got 50 mpg on his X5 45e (6 cyl but before they changed the branding to 50e) - he did so by running half his miles (5k) in EV only. I think these are metric miles, so equates to 30 miles per gallon US? I guess he was on lower speed roads where the battery could regen, and he must have plugged in every night. His cost was 14p/kWh and 125p/litre (473p/gallon).

Our iX gets about 80mpge. M3 gets 18 mpg. If the M5 got 30-40mpge it might make sense. But what does it actually achieve? They should tell you up front. I’ve asked the same question in the XM forums and the answer is 18-20mpg. How does that justify the additional weight and cost?

Yeah, exactly, ours is the X5 45e. Hybrids work if you’re in an area with cheap electricity, or if you have so much solar generation you have excess. We have solar but it just covers our yearly usage (no plug in cars, no AC). Electricity is so expensive where we are, $0.50 / kWhr and going up. So what we have is a very nice SUV with some brake generation that gets the same gas mileage as my V8 620hp super car.
